The transfer window is once again shaking up the Spanish football landscape, and Robin Le Normand finds himself at the centre of speculation. The Franco-Spanish defender, whose contract with Atlético de Madrid runs until June 30, 2029, has seen rumours about his potential departure from the Metropolitano intensify, with Athletic Club emerging as a serious contender to secure his services.

Robin Le Normand joined Atlético de Madrid on July 27, 2024, from Real Sociedad, in a deal reportedly worth around €34.5 million plus variables. His signing was considered a priority to strengthen Los Rojiblancos' defence. During his time at Real Sociedad, Le Normand established himself as a reliable centre-back, becoming a key player and winning the Copa del Rey in April 2021. He has also represented the Spanish national team, with whom he won the UEFA Nations League in 2023 and Euro 2024.

However, recent reports suggest that Le Normand's performance at Atlético may not have met the expectations generated by his high transfer fee. This situation could have led the Madrid club to consider offers for the defender, opening the door for a potential exit.

Athletic Club, Seeking to Bolster Their Defence

On the other hand, Athletic Club has shown notable interest in Le Normand. The Basque club, known for its strict transfer philosophy, would see the centre-back as a perfect fit. Le Normand, who holds Spanish nationality and has spent a significant part of his professional career in Basque football (with Real Sociedad), would meet the requirements to wear the Athletic shirt.

Defence has been an area Athletic has sought to strengthen on several occasions. Despite having centre-backs like Dani Vivian, Yeray Álvarez, and Aitor Paredes, injuries and the need to maintain a competitive squad, especially with European aspirations, make the search for reinforcements constant. Le Normand's potential arrival would bring experience, robustness, and ball-playing ability, qualities that Atlético de Madrid highlighted when announcing him as their new player.

A Turn in Negotiations

It is worth noting that last May, Atlético de Madrid had reportedly offered Le Normand to Athletic Club for a sum close to €20 million, an amount that the Bilbao side considered high at the time, prioritising other operations. However, the current situation appears to have changed, with Atlético more receptive to listening to proposals, which could facilitate a new approach.

The operation would depend not only on Atlético's willingness to part with the player but also on Athletic's decision to adjust their squad. With four centre-backs already available and the expected return of players like Unai Egiluz in 2027, Le Normand's arrival would necessitate squad movements at Athletic to accommodate his wages and free up space.

The transfer market continues its course, and Robin Le Normand's future looks set to be one of the season's sagas. His career, Spanish nationality, and past in Basque football make him a highly attractive target for Athletic, while Atlético de Madrid evaluates its options to optimise its squad. The possibility of seeing Le Normand defending the red-and-white colours of Athletic Club is a scenario gaining momentum with each passing day.
